Art & Culture of Caorle

The city of Caorle is sited in a very rich area of the Adriatic Coast. In fact, this stretch of coast is rich of paludal vegetation and sandy littoral belts. The first inhabitants of the Selva Caprulana improved the art of fishing as their best life-support system. They constructed also a lot of boats and nets, starting a real fishing activity. It is therefore in the lagoon that the ancient and archetypical history of Caorle finds its very origins. Caorle was once a settlement of fishers who lived out of fish. Today the same valleys are inhabited by the last generations of those fishers and their old-fashioned style of life reminds us to the old legends and history of this place. However, fifty years ago entire families of fishers still used to leave for the “fraìma” between September and December with few things.

The fishers had to reach the so called “casoni,” barracks, to spend a long period of time there and bring the fish to the piscatorial authority. Once there were here only lagoons, marshlands, shoals and cane fields. The inhabitants of this littoral stretch were very able to construct the typical “casoni”, some barracks to live and work in. These structures were used as refuges and shelters, as well as sheds for nets and fishing tools. You can still find some of them around the surroundings of Caorle.

Nature and Artists in Caorle

You can find them isolated or in groups, especially at Falconera or between Plangon and Nicesolo. It seems that the first elements of these structures date back to the II century a.c. Today you have the opportunity to visit them and discover their ancient and hidden secrets. The typical “casone” has to windows and a “fogher,” hearth. The floor is usually made of bricks. Natural materials such as the paludal cane were used for the construction of the structures. Even though the running of time has not completely saved this zone, the lagoon of Caorle still occupies a relevant stretch of the area, a sort of paradise animated by the flight of seagulls, white herons and coots in a magical and natural atmosphere.

The famous American writer Ernest Hemingway used to be a guest of Baron Raimondo Franchetti and spend some periods of time in the lagoon of Caorle. It was right there that he found inspiration for one of his famous short stories. Caorle is a cradle of history and culture, come a find out all its secrets!
